A Message from the Alumni Association President
On behalf of the Alumni Association, I would like to welcome the Class of 2018 to the Alumni Association. Our organization has been dedicated to providing scholarships and grants to Downstate Medical Students. We would like to thank those who have contributed in the past and hope that you will continue your support. For those of you that have not supported our efforts to ease the burden of the medical students, you should be aware that we provide approximately $700,000 per year in scholarships and grants to medical students. As the costs of medical education continue to rise and young physicians are frequently saddled with large debt upon graduation there is a need to increase our scholarship giving. Even the smallest donations in large number add up. We are encouraging all alumni to donate something to the Association.
Being a source of scholarships is not the only purpose of the organization. Using social media we are creating a Downstate Community where Alumni can share with the classmates, colleagues and new friends. We encourage all of you to join our social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram & Twitter).
The Alumni Association is also planning regional networking events. If you would like to host one help plan one in your area please contact me or the Alumni Office.
There are over 10,000 of us who have walked the same halls, studied in the same classrooms and hospitals. We obtained a top rate education and share a common bond. We are a diverse yet have a lot in common. It is time for us to reconnect.
Every year we have an annual Alumni Gala which emphasizes the five-year classes but everybody is welcome. This year we are adding a silent auction. Anyone who would like to donate to the auction should contact us. Anything of value would be appreciated. If you have season tickets and want to donate a pair or if you know of a local merchant who wants to donate goods or services please let us know. All donations are tax deductible.
During my presidency, I plan to expand the role of the Alumni Association as a resource to all alumni. I welcome your suggestions and your help. Please feel free to contact me.
Michael T. Goldstein, M.D., J.D.
