Class Notes: February 2020

Ira S. Jaffrey, MD’ 65, FACP has moved to Arizona, the hummingbird capital of America.

Allen Kaplan, MD’ 65 was honored by The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, with the establishment of a lectureship in his name. He has retired from basic research in urticaria and angioedema as of one year ago. His fifty-plus years’ effort has culminated in the use of omalizumab as the drug of choice for chronic urticaria (which he first reported in 2008) and the approval of a monoclonal antibody to plasma kallikrein as prophylactic therapy for hereditary angioedema, which is based largely on his studies of the mechanism of formation of bradykinin in human plasma.

Gilbert Martin, MD’ 67 is a neonatologist in West Covina, California and has just published a book entitled Common Problems in The Newborn Nursery. The publisher is Springer.

Sherwood Cantor, MD’ 69 is still in practice. He is still grateful to SUNY faculty for his medical education and to his classmates for friendship and support. He is happy to hear about everyone’s success.

Henry W. Lim, MD’ 75 was selected for the Alumni Achievement Award for Distinguished Service to American Medicine during the Downstate Alumni Reunion in 2019; this is the highest award given by the Alumni Association. He was elected to the Board of the International League of Dermatological Societies during the 24th World Congress of Dermatology in Milan, Italy in June 2019. He was awarded the Finsen Medal for this contribution of photodermatology during the 17th International Congress of Photobiology in Barcelona, Spain in August 2019.

Gary B. Witman, MD’ 75 WITMAN, GARY B., M.D., 68, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, April 30, 2018. Born in New York and raised in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Seymour and Ruth (Malamud) Witman, and is survived by his wife Dee Dee (Zarum) Witman.
